In the field of power electronics, Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems (ENAS) demonstrates strong expertise along the entire innovation chain, from material and device concepts to smart systems integration and reliability assessment. A key competence lies in advanced packaging and integration technologies for power electronic modules, including hybrid and heterogeneous integration concepts. These technologies enable high power density, improved thermal management, and enhanced reliability, which are essential for growing requirements of e-mobility, renewable energy systems, smart grids, and industrial power applications.
A core competence of Fraunhofer ENAS in power electronics is Design for Reliability. This approach integrates reliability considerations from the earliest design stages through simulation, virtual prototyping, and experimental validation. ENAS performs multi-physics simulation of power electronic components and systems, including thermal, mechanical, and electrical stresses, to predict lifetime and failure mechanisms. These activities are complemented by extensive reliability testing, covering temperature cycling, power cycling, vibration, and humidity tests, as well as multimodal load scenarios that reflect field application conditions. Detailed failure analysis and materials characterization provide feedback for optimized designs, reduced development time, and increased lifetime together with higher product robustness.
The European Test and Reliability Center (ETRC), hosted at Fraunhofer ENAS, serves as a central platform for testing and reliability assessment of semiconductor components and power electronic systems. The ETRC combines modern test infrastructure with more than 25 years of experience in reliability research. In the context of power electronics, the ETRC supports qualification, lifetime prediction, and technology transfer by linking experimental testing with modeling, simulation, and data-based methods, including digital twins and machine learning. This holistic “lab-to-fab” approach helps industry partners accelerate innovation while ensuring reliable, sustainable, and competitive cutting-edge products.
