Torque-Control of PMSM

  • Overview

Compared to the DC motor, the PMSM is more robust (no commutator), smaller and less expensive. Controlling is more complicated than for a DC machine, but with progress in power electronics and the cheap computational power available with today's microprocessors, it is possible, e.g. with 'dq-control', to achieve dynamic behavior of the PMSM comparable to that of a DC machine.

  • Operation
    • The reference value of iSq is set to produce a torque which balances exactly the load of the elevator. Add a passenger to make the load torque larger than the machine torque. This will drag the elevator down (the machine will start to rotate).
    • Reducing the passenger number (by clicking the according red text in the applet) will make the machine torque larger than the load torque. The elevator will move the people upwards.
    • Use the red slider to change the reference current iSq_ref in order to make the machine torque larger or smaller than the load torque (see above).
    • Changing the red slider of the reference current iSd_ref will not change the torque but the relative fields. The current component iSd increases current stress and losses, and is therefore normally regulated to be zero.
