Chips JU Project: WBG Pilot Line

The WBG Pilot Line is one of the five pilot lines launched under the Chips for Europe Initiative, a key pillar of the European Chips Act. It focuses on Wide Bandgap semiconductors, particularly SiC and GaN, which are used in high-power and high-frequency applications. The project is coordinated by CNR and include 15 RTOs from 7 EU countries.

The project aims to realise an integrated pilot line focused on the developments of the wide–bandgap (WBG) semiconductors technologies for power and radio frequency (RF) electronics.  The WBG semiconductor pilot lines will address all the front–end critical issues related to the realisation of devices with power and RF performance much higher than those realised by the conventional silicon technology, will define a clear roadmap for the development of such advanced technologies, will investigate strategies to improve the structural and electrical properties of WBG (and Ultra–WBG) semiconductors, and will develop new MEMS devices based on WBG and Ultra-WBG devices.

With the entry into force of the Chips Act on 21 September 2023, the Chips for Europe Initiative has been established.
With a total budget of €3.7 billion, Chips JU funded 5 Pilot Lines focused on different advanced semiconductor technologies:

  • NanoIC – Beyond 2nm leading-edge system-on-chip

  • FAMES – Fully depleted silicon-on-insulator applications

  • APECS – Advanced packaging WBG – wide band gap materials PIXEurope

  • WBG – wide band gap materials
  • PIXEurope – Advanced photonic integrated circuits
