The transition towards a decarbonised/defossilised energy system is one of the defining technological challenges of our time. Achieving ambitious climate targets and making Europe less dependent on fossil imports requires not only a massive expansion of renewable electricity generation, but also rapid advancements in electrification of, ideally, all end-use applications, and consequently of power electronics as the enabling technology. Furthermore, converter-driven electrical applications will play a major role in grid stability and resilience.
This ECPE workshop addresses the decarbonisation / de-fossilisation through electrification of hard-to-abate industrial sectors like the production of metals, cement, and chemicals (e.g., fertilisers, plastics), starting from application requirements and broader decarbonisation pathways, e.g., using synthetic fuels (e-fuels). Building on this foundation, the programme highlights direct electrification as a key lever for decarbonised production, with a focus on large-scale processes such as high-temperature heating, electrochemical, and plasma-based technologies. The second part of the workshop focuses on the role of power electronics in enabling these transitions, covering converter requirements, system architectures, and practical solutions from grid to process level. Finally, the workshop provides an outlook on key R&D directions, including emerging applications, system-level challenges, co-optimisation of processes and power converters, and educational needs.
A central goal is to foster exchange between technology providers and industrial users through invited talks, case-studies, and impulse talks. Cross-cutting aspects such as energy supply and grid integration are addressed throughout, ensuring a holistic perspective on electrification pathways.
All presentations and discussions will be in English.
