ECPE received the Award
Competence Network 2010

ECPE received from the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology the award Competence Network 2010. The competition „Strategy-making and strategic Communication“ was targeting at more than 100 innovative and powerful Networks in Germany. ECPE was highest awarded for the contribution „Power Electronics – Key Technology for efficient and sustainable Energy Use“. The prize is worth 15.000 Euros. The Parlamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics, Hans-Joachim Otto, handed over the award in the frame of the annual meeting of the initiative Competence Networks Germany held on 2 March in Berlin.
We are very pleased and honoured receiving this award which will boost our efforts to promote power electronics as key technology for energy efficiency and sustainability.

Strategic Research Agenda on Intelligent Power Electronics for Energy Efficiency

Energy saving, improved energy efficiency and environmental protection are ubiquitous topics in society, in Europe and globally. Despite many efforts to save energy, the demand for electricity is expected to grow and much faster in comparison with other energy sources over the next three decades. Today 40% of all energy consumption is in electrical energy, but this will grow to 60% by 2040. On the other side, the share of electrical energy which will be controlled by power electronics e.g. in variable speed drives will increase from 40% in 2000 to 80% in 2015.
Smart power electronics can make a large difference in the energy efficiency of products and systems and is a cornerstone for sustainable use of ICT, automation, and numerous other electricity powered devices.

European Workshop on Energy Efficiency
-the Role of Power Electronics

Brussels/Belgium

One key topic in society, on the European level and globally, is energy saving and improved energy efficiency. The role of power electronics for the energy efficiency will be highlighted in a European Workshop organised by ECPE European Center for Power Electronics in cooperation with EPE Association.

Objectives:
- show the energy saving potential of power electronics in key applications e.g. for drives, lighting and power supplies
- inform on planned topics in FP7 referring to power electronics, especially in energy efficiency
- show R&D needs in power electronics to improve energy efficiency: examples and visions
- demonstrate the importance of power electro¬nics in saving electrical energy as a key and enabling technology
- prepare research proposals: R & D needs and research directions

Stephan Linder - Power Semiconductors

This book is offering the basics of the most important power electronics devices such as pin diode, bipolar transistor, thyristor, GTO, power MOSFET, IGBT and the derivatives. To understand the behaviour of the devices, a decription of semiconductor physics is given in advance and in detail for every device. Further on, design parameters are derived from physics like switching, short circuit, timing behaviour, etc. The author presents insight from application point of view as well.
