Bodo's Power Systems / March 2010

 THE EXPERT'S VIEW
Now is the Time for Strategic Thinking and Action
at European Level

We are experiencing changing times from the carbon era to the age of solar power, and from an energy consuming society to an energy efficiency society.
The European Union's ambitious climate goals for the reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions cannot be achieved without the extensive use of power electronics.

Power Electronics Europe - October 2009

On the Road to Higher Efficiency
After the Silicon Carbide User Forums organised by ECPE in 2006 and 2007, the time had come to continue the exchange between experts involved in converter and device development. The third User Forum (September 11-12, Barcelona, Spain) also considered other wide bandgap devices for the first time, in particular Gallium Nitride (GaN). Again, it has focused on typical power electronic systems. The use of wide bandgap is highly promising for electric drives, converters in transportation and power supplies. Additionally, an insight in recent material and device technology, which is the base for future system development, has been given.

Power Electronics Europe / April 2008

CIPS2008 - Strengthening Europe's Position in Power Electronics
The program for this years's Conference on Integrated Power Electronic Systems (CIPS) from March 11-13 in Nuremberg/Germany included 11 conference sessions with the presentation of 55 technical papers. 84% of them came from nine European Countries, 8% from North America, and 8% from Far East. The program also included 12 invited papers, athored by qualified experts coming from important industrial and academic organisations. General Chairman J. Daan van Wyk was proud to announce the participation of more than 180 delegates for thsi first stand-alone conference, while in previous years CIPS has been held in conjunction with ISPSD or PESC. For the first time a session on 'Technology Roadmaps' for Power Electronics has been organised, and five contributions gave an insight to the ECPE initiative on technology roadmaps.

Bodo's Power / April 2008

 Guest Editorial by Thomas Harder
"Energy Efficiency and the More-Electric-World"
For many years, power electronics has been a well developing industrial segment with solid annual growth rates and a very dynamic technology progress e.g. in power semiconductor technology or system integration.
As a cross functional discipline, power electronics is a key and enabling technology for many industrial segments such as automotive, home and office, communication, automation, energy supply and distribution, etc. But in spite of this important role, power electronics is not well recognised outside the power community, there is almost no awareness in public. This was one motivation for European power electronics industry to found the ECPE Network with one focus on public relations and lobbying for power electronics in Europe, apart from the other activities in precompetitive research as well as education and advanced training.
Two negative consequences of this shadowy existence are that research funding programmes do not target at power electronics innovations, and that power electronics is not attracting young engineers.

 Silicon Carbide Switches become reality
ECPE 2nd SiC User Forum
The SiC User Forum this way became a platform to share experience and ideas, to discuss and find out which power electronic systems are predestinated for usage of SiC and how to appropriately design-in those novel, almost ideal but also challenging components. It aimed at finding and pointing out approaches to exploit the high potential of SiC and to support its beneficial introduction in power electronic systems.
SiC User Forum 2007 —attended by some 120 international participants —took place right after EPE conference 2007 in the Danish capital Copenhagen. Prof. Andreas Lindemann (Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, Germany) took the chair together with Dr. Hiromichi Ohashi (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan) and Mr. Thomas Harder (ECPE).
The major findings of the event are summarised in the following:

Power Electronics Europe - May/June 2007

 Hot Topic Energy Efficiency
Energy saving, improved energy efficiency and environmental protection are ubiquitous topics in society, in Europe and globally. Despite many efforts to save energy, demand for electricity is expected to grow, and much faster in comparison with other energy sources over the next three decades.
Power electronics is the key technology to controlling the flow of electrical energy from the source to the load precisely, according to the requirements of the load.

 System Integration in Industrial Drives
The main goal of the ECPE Demonstrator Program “Industrial Drives – System Integration” is to significantly reduce the converter size of an industrial drive for an asynchronous machine compared to state-of-the-art commercial units. The best power density on the market for inverters in the power range of concern (~2kW) is about 1kW/l. Thereby, the development of the key technologies in the project is focused on compact design, manufacturability and costs.

System Integrated Drive for Hybrid Traction in Automotive
The integration of the power electronic inverter with an electrical machine in the automotive powertrain is in the focus of the ECPE automotive Demonstrator Programme where the existing cooling circuit from the internal combustion engine is also used for the direct liquid cooling of the power electronics. The mechatronic integration of motor and power electronics leads to an ultra-high power density of 75 kVA/l for the inverter. The high temperature of the cooling medium of up to 115°C in combination with this high power density poses a unique challenge.
